Canon Honours Scholarship 2008 awarded to Ben Karpin
Sydney, June 2008 - Canon Australia and The University of Sydney have named Ben Karpin as the Canon Honours Scholarship winner for 2008. Ben was selected by the Faculty of Economics and Business for achieving the highest average marks in the Marketing major units of study in the Marketing Honours program.
The Canon Honours Scholarship fund was established in 2003, and consists of a donation of $100,000 from Canon Australia to the University of Sydney to create a continuing annual scholarship of $5,000. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student accepted into the Marketing Honours program who demonstrates the greatest proficiency in their Marketing major units of study. The total of $5,000 is paid to the student in two equal instalments at the beginning of each semester.
"Canon values education and is delighted to continue to support and invest in tomorrow's marketers through this scholarship. We selected the University of Sydney based on its reputation for academic excellence and its results-focused approach to modern learning, particularly in business-related studies," said Mr Shuichi Tsukahara, Managing Director of Canon Australia.
"At Canon, we believe that marketing is one of the fundamentals to business success. It has certainly played a key role in Canon becoming a market leader in digital imaging products in Australia. We are keen to foster quality marketing talent in the Australian marketplace at the highest level, and the continuing scholarship will allow us to contribute on an ongoing basis," added Mr Tsukahara.
"At a very early stage in my university life I set myself the goal of graduating with an honours degree in marketing. However, entering my penultimate year the financial strain that comes with being a student had me questioning whether an honours year would be feasible," said Ben. "I have seen other students struggle to balance the demands of work with the extra study commitments during this time, and was apprehensive about continuing my studies if I would be unable to achieve to my own personal standards. The Canon Scholarship has enabled me to fully devote myself to my university work without the extra burden that a part-time job brings. Thanks to Canon's generosity I will leave university with the satisfaction that I have been able to give 100% throughout my academic career."
The University of Sydney is a university of first choice for most students. It is also Australia's leading research-intensive university, winning the largest share of competitive research funds from the Federal government. Sydney's student teacher ratio of 15:1 is one of the best in Australia and well below the national average of 18:1. It provides the largest number of higher degree research programs of any Australian university and has the highest number of research degree completions.
The 2009 Canon Honours Scholarship will be awarded in May 2009.
