Peter Coulson, Canon AIPP APPA Winner

Peter Coulson, a commercial photographer particularly strong in fashion and advertising, talks about his recent Canon AIPP APPA win and why he chooses Canon EOS.

"Winning the 2010 Canon AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of the Year award, as well as the Commercial category, was massive for me and entirely unexpected. To me, winning this award is equivalent to winning a gold Logie; it is the best award I could win in Australia and without a doubt a career highlight. To be judged by photographers I admire makes it even more humbling.

My winning images are a collection of commercial images I’ve shot over the last year. My work is often characterised by humour as well as a strong connection with the model, which I feel is illustrated in my winning APPA images. When taking a photo I look for negative space, shadows, simplicity and the opportunity to tell a hundred stories within the one image.

To shoot my images I use a combination of the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III and medium format. I can’t go past the incredible capabilities that Canon offers, particularly its beautiful ISO 100 setting - essential if I want to shoot wide open at f2.8 on a bright sunny day.

Canon’s RAW converter software, Digital Photo Professional, also impresses me. For fine-art printing, it produces better quality, dynamic range and colour than my other software."

Peter Coulson owns Koukei Photography and hosts photography workshops focused mainly around Studio Photography and getting to know your camera.
