Wind

//Open Brief

This brief is all about finding something special in the everyday. Everything is affected by the wind, so you only have
to look around you for inspiration. Failing that, you could use a fan and create your own.

This brief has now closed.

Judge's Notes

//Tania Niwa

You can choose to freeze the effects of wind by sharply capturing moving subjects or experiment with blurring.

Consider panning to freeze your subject against a blurred background or use a tripod and experiment with slower shutter speeds to convey movement.

You could also think about the effect wind has on different subjects.

Tips & Tricks

Wind // Open Brief

  1. Try capturing the real-time effect of wind on different subjects. Experiment with an interesting and varied range until you’re happy with something. Start off with simple, everyday things like water, trees, grass and hair.

  2. You could then look at the long-term effect of wind on a range of subjects like windswept beaches, stunted trees, sand dunes etc.

  3. Play with objects that float and fly in the wind. See if you can capture something which evokes emotion like 'dancing' feathers, dust 'riding' the wind or billowing smoke.

  4. Experiment with your shutter speeds to show blurring of objects in wind. You’ll only be able to find the perfect shutter speeds you need with trial and error so be patient.

  5. If you are lucky you may be able to capture large scale atmospheric disturbances by the wind like crashing waves or dust storms.
