Canon has issued a product advisory for Personal Copiers FC-1 and FC-2, which were last sold in Australia in July 1993. Canon is offering customers still using these machines free inspections to ensure that they can continue using them with confidence.
The advisory relates to a phenomenon know as tracking* which can potentially occur on the surface of circuit boards over time and, in rare cases, result in smoke emission or fire. Should it occur, Canon has confirmed that fire will not spread beyond the location of the tracking.
Though there have not been any reported incidents outside Japan and there are likely to be very few machines still in use in Australia, Canon is committed to ensuring the satisfaction of its customers.
Canon advises all customers in Australia still using a Personal Copier FC-1 or FC-2 to contact (02) 8879-7660 to organise a free product inspection and preventative treatment.
To all customers using the products in question, we extend our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience resulting from this issue.
* Tracking: a phenomenon in which various factors such as dust or humidity can result in the creation of a weak electrical current in a location where electricity was not originally supposed to flow, resulting in the creation of a conductive carbon path.
