The ambition of “This is Australia” Collection is to capture the Australian lifestyle of today and help the marketing industry to represent our country in all its diversity. Our program got off to a great start, with over 5,000 images already created in just a few months, and 200 new photographers signed up to Getty Images.
To support the Canon community in their contributor journey, we’re excited to announce a grant program in support of “This is Australia” shoot briefs.

Win up to $2,000 per individual submission.
There will be two rounds of grants in 2018 with a total of $10,000 in funding available. The grants will be awarded to up to 10 photographers.
Round 2 is open 1 October – 21 October.
Grant support is provided for shoots for the ‘This is Australia’ brief: Age is Just a Number
The funds are aimed to support the costs for your own production shoot. We’ve put together the budget template to help you plan the costs – funding decisions will be made based on that budget and the shoot idea. Please note, that gear purchase and your labour costs are not covered by this grant.
In addition to the funding, successful grant recipients will receive:
• Shoot planning and art-direction guidance from one of Getty Images art-directors: how to fine-tune your shoot concept, help with model and location selection, shooting techniques and shot list. For those based in Sydney, an art-director will be present at the shoot for hands-on guidance
• Editor support with image selection and keywording
• Marketing of your shoot to Getty Images customers in Australia
How to enter:
1. Review the briefs and using that theme, develop a concept or scenario for your shoot. We recommend focusing on reasonably easy to execute ideas, involving people you know, so you can spend more of the budget on location, shoot participants or props you wouldn’t be able to secure otherwise.
2. Plan out your shoot by filling in the Shoot Brief Template. This is key to ensuring your shoot plan is clear. This will also be used to evaluate all shoots.
3. Calculate your shoot costs using the budget template (included in the Brief template). Please note, that the awarded amount per shoot will be between $600 and $2,000, depending on the complexity of the shoot and your proposed costs. Please only include the actual costs you need covered, rather than the maximum available.
4. Submit your completed Grant Application (Shoot Plan + Budget) to submit@canon.com.au by 11.59pm on 21 October 2018. Your entry should be under 10mb in size, which may mean including low-res images where required.
• Submissions must be from Getty contributors
• All produced content should be submitted exclusively to Getty Images “This is Australia” Collection using provided Brief IDs
• Content should be shot using Canon gear
• The shoot should be conducted throughout November and edited content should be uploaded to Getty Images via ESP by 15th December 2018.
Terms and Conditions apply.

1. Grant decisions will be made by 25th October 2018, with winners notified via email. If successful, you will need to confirm your acceptance of the grant conditions and commitment to produce the shoot. Winning projects will then be announced on the program page at canon.com.au/thisisaustralia by 26th October 2018.
2. If you’re successful, we will put you in touch with your art-director to start planning your shoot – it’s time to bring your project to life!
1. How well does the shoot idea answer one of the 3 briefs: Multicultural Australia, Repicturing Gender, or Conceptual Realism?
2. How strong is the concept – will this shoot sell well as stock?
3. Does this shoot provide content Getty Images don’t already have?
• Review the 3 available ‘This is Australia’ creative briefs on the Contributor Community website for scenario suggestions
• Research Getty Images website to see what is already available: What is oversaturated? What’s missing? Shoot beyond the obvious, not more of the same. Clients want variety and believability.
• Research your shoot topic in all forms of media, i.e. print, web, film, fine art, etc as well as considering your own experiences.
• Consider your shoot concepts and their sale-ability/readability. What are the key concepts you are trying to communicate? What message or emotion will the pictures convey?
• Know your subject and concept. Clients are looking for: Originality, Relevance, Impact, Believability, Visual Clarity
• Think about how your images will connect with customers. Consider your client and the usage of the images(s). What product, goods or services will your images support?
• Always focus on the usability of what you are producing as stock photography.
