The Canon Collective is a group of passionate photography Ambassadors dedicated to helping you grow your skills in relaxed, down-to-earth environment.
In this article Neal Walters — one of our Melbourne-based Canon Collective Ambassadors — shares a bit about what makes him tick.
Describe yourself in 25 words or less:
I’m an energetic photography nerd that will shoot anything, anytime, anywhere.
Tell us about your photography journey so far:
I started in music, and grew my portfolio as quickly as I possibly could. I then fell into directing music videos and short films.
Share the story behind one of your most memorable photographs:
My favourite photo I've ever taken is of Northlane at this year’s Unify Gathering. They had purple smoke on stage, and my 1D-X Mark II did the rest.
Explain your go-to gear and why you rate it so highly:
My go-to setup includes my 1D-X Mark II
and EF 24-70mm f/2.8 II USM
lens. This combo is a massively versatile setup, and can shoot pretty much anything at any given time.
What's your favourite part of your job as a Canon Collective Ambassador?
I love being able to teach — and learn from — everyone I come into contact with.
If weren't a Canon Collective Ambassador what would you be doing?
Trying to become a Canon Collective Ambassador…
What's the first thing a new photographer needs to learn?
They should learn how to chase light. Light is the most vital part of photography, and learning how to make it your friend is vital.
Who inspires you?
Stanley Kubrick, Jack Nicholson, Annie Leibovitz, Spike Jonez and James Hartley.
Where is your favourite location to shoot and why?
Cape Schanck. It has everything from pure blue water, to overbearing rocks, to a perfect lighthouse.
What are your photography goals for this year:
Create the best events possible in every area of photography.
You can create one more image before you die – what is it of?
A friend at the top of Mt Fuji.
