Watch the story of Girt by Sea

Born out of lingering childhood curiosity, Girt by Sea is the result of a unique, aerial photography adventure by two Australian photographers.

Denis Glennon and Tony Hewitt circumnavigated our island continent in a light aircraft, to experience and bring new meaning to those three words. It's a photographic odyssey that taps into an ongoing curiosity with our vibrant coastline.

Tony has been photographing professionally for nearly 30 years. He is a Grand Master of Photography and Honorary Fellow of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography and in 2013 was awarded the Canon AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of the Year. His photographic journey has seen him explore various photographic genres including fine art, landscape, and portrait, along with presenting over 15 solo exhibitions. Tony has developed a reputation as an instinctive creative who touches the heart and changes thinking, and he is regularly invited as a speaker to share his photographic vision and the philosophy behind it. He trusts the images seen in this collection will provide inspiration to others to discover for themselves the incredible abstract beauty inherent in Australia’s coastline. Girt by Sea is the culmination of a personal lifetime ambition and he considers it a privilege to have worked alongside Denis, whose passion and determination were invaluable in the success of such a momentous undertaking.

Denis made Western Australia his home in 1974. He spent thirty-five years in the corporate world in various parts of the globe and holds graduate qualifications in engineering, psychology, science and education. In 2000 he was awarded an AO (Officer of the Order of Australia). He views the almost unbelievable images from the circumnavigation of Australia as one of the highlights in his photographic life and trusts the collection will encourage others to explore the special magic of aerial photography. When pushed for an answer on how best to capture such images he says: “The technique is relatively simple. The camera is a tool to collect pixels, just concentrate on honing the ability to connect with what nature is telling you and the door to iconic photographs will be opened.” On undertaking the Girt by Sea adventure with Tony, he says: “It was an absolute pleasure, a privileged experience
