Writing Error/Output Error/Communication Error (Windows)

Issue

Cause and solution

Check 1: If the Power lamp is off, make sure that the power plug is plugged in, then turn the printer on

While the Power lamp is flashing green, the printer is initializing. Wait until the Power lamp stops flashing and remains lit green.

Cause and solution

Check 2: Make sure that the printer port is configured appropriately in the printer driver

* In the following instructions, "XXX" signifies your printer's name.

1. Log on as a user account with administrator privilege.

2. Select Devices and Printers from the Start menu.

When using Windows 7, select Start menu ⋗ Control Panel ⋗ Hardware and Sound ⋗ Devices and Printers.

In Windows Vista, select the Start menu ⋗ Control Panel ⋗ Hardware and Sound ⋗ Printers.

In Windows XP, select the Start menu ⋗ Control Panel ⋗ Printers and Other Hardware ⋗ Printers and Faxes.

3. Right-click the Canon XXX icon, then select Printer properties.

In Windows Vista or Windows XP, right-click the Canon XXX icon (where "XXX" is your printer's name), then select Properties.

4. Click the Ports tab to confirm the port settings.

Make sure that a port named USBnnn (where "n" is a number) with Canon XXX appearing in the Printer column is selected for Print to the following port(s).

If the setting is incorrect:

Reinstall the printer driver.

Printing does not start even though the port named USBnnn is selected:

Launch Canon My Printer from the task tray, select Diagnose and Repair Printer. Follow the on-screen instructions to set the correct printer port, then select Canon XXX.

If the problem is not resolved, reinstall the printer driver.

Cause and solution

Check 3: Make sure that the USB cable is securely plugged in to the printer and the computer

When the printer is connected to your computer with a USB cable, check the followings:

If you are using a relay device such as a USB hub, disconnect it, connect the printer directly to the computer, and try printing again. If printing starts normally, there is a problem with the relay device. Consult the reseller of the relay device for details.
There could also be a problem with the USB cable. Replace the USB cable and try printing again.

Cause and solution

Check 4: Make sure that the printer driver is installed correctly

Uninstall the printer driver following the procedure described in Deleting the Unnecessary Printer Driver , insert the Setup CD-ROM into the computer's disc drive and perform Custom Install and select IJ Printer Driver to install again.

Do not connect the USB cable yet.

To use the printer by connecting it to a computer, software including the drivers needs to be copied (installed) to the computer's hard disk. The installation process takes about 20 minutes. (The installation time varies depending on the computer environment or the number of application software to be installed.)

Caution

Quit all applications before installation.
Log on as the administrator (or a member of the Administrators group).

Windows

Caution

If you connect the printer via USB cable before installing the software:

For Windows 7

(1) Remove the USB cable connected to your computer.

(2) Proceed to 1.

For Windows Vista/Windows XP

This dialog box may appear.

(1) Remove the USB cable connected to your computer.

If the dialog box closes, proceed to 1.

(2) Click Cancel.

(3) Proceed to 1.

Easy-WebPrint EX

Easy-WebPrint EX is Web print software that is installed on the computer when installing the supplied software. Internet Explorer 7 or later is required to use this software. An Internet connection is required for installation.

1.

Press the ON button (A) to TURN OFF THE PRINTER.

2.

Turn on the computer, then insert the Setup CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

If you are using Windows, the setup program starts automatically.

Caution

If the program does not start automatically, double-click the CD-ROM icon in Computer or My Computer, then double-click MSETUP4.EXE.

Click Run Msetup4.exe on the AutoPlay screen, then click Yes or Continue on the User Account Control dialog box.

If the User Account Control dialog box reappears in following steps, click Yes or Continue.

Select your place of residence, then click Next.

Caution

If the Select Language screen appears, select a language, then click Next.

5.

Select a country or region, then click Next.

6.

Click Easy Install.

The drivers, application software, and on-screen manuals are installed.

Caution

If you want to select particular items to install, click Custom Install.

7.

Click Install.

Follow any on-screen instructions to proceed with the software installation.

[Important Information for the Installation]

- USB Port

When the Printer Connection screen appears, connect the printer to the computer with a USB cable.

After connecting the cable, TURN ON THE PRINTER.

- Print Head Alignment

Load a sheet of supplied specialty paper for Print Head Alignment (Matte Photo Paper MP-101) in the Rear Tray (B) and click Execute. For details, refer from 8 in "Load Paper".

Make sure that the Paper Output Tray (C) and Output Tray Extension (D) are opened.

When the blue and black pattern (E) shown is printed, Print Head Alignment is now complete.

In Windows, click Next on the Print Head Alignment screen.

Wait until the pattern printing ends (about 5 minutes).

Caution

If the Alarm lamp (orange) (F) flashes, press the RESUME/CANCEL button (G) on the printer to clear the error, then click Next. After the installation is complete, perform Print Head Alignment by referring to Alarm Lamp Flashes Orange .

- Necessary Information for the User Registration

When the serial number is not displayed on the registration screen automatically, input the serial number located inside the printer (as shown in the illustration).

Caution

If the power is on, the Print Head Holder will move when the Top Cover (H) is opened.

Caution

The User Registration screen will only be displayed when Europe, Middle East, Africa is selected on the Select Your Place of Residence screen.

-If the Extended Survey Program screen appears

If you can agree to Extended Survey Program, click Agree.

If you click Do not agree, the Extended Survey Program will not be installed.

(This has no effect on the printer's functionality.)

8.

Click Exit to complete the installation.

9.

For Windows

Solution Menu EX starts.

For Macintosh

Solution Menu EX starts when clicking OK in the Canon Solution Menu EX dialog.

Remove the Setup CD-ROM and keep it in a safe place.

Caution

The buttons displayed on Solution Menu EX may vary depending on the country or region of purchase.

Installing the XPS Printer Driver

In Windows 7 and Windows Vista SP1 or later, the XPS Printer Driver can be installed additionally. To install, perform from 1.

Click Custom Install in 6, then select XPS Printer Driver in the Custom Install screen.

Macintosh

1.

Press the ON button (A) to TURN OFF THE PRINTER.

2.

Turn on the computer, then insert the Setup CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

If you are using Windows, the setup program starts automatically.

3.

Double-click the Setup icon of the CD-ROM folder to proceed to the following screen. Enter your administrator name and password, then click OK.

If the CD-ROM folder does not open automatically, double-click the CD-ROM icon on the desktop.

If you do not know your administrator name or password, click the help button, then follow the on-screen instructions.

4.

Select your place of residence, then click Next.

Caution

If the Select Language screen appears, select a language, then click Next.

5.

Select a country or region, then click Next.

6.

Click Easy Install.

The drivers, application software, and on-screen manuals are installed.

Caution

If you want to select particular items to install, click Custom Install.

7.

Click Install.

Follow any on-screen instructions to proceed with the software installation.

[Important Information for the Installation]

Install the Software

Cause and solution

Check 5: Check the status of the device on your computer

Follow the procedure below to check the status of the device.

1. Click Control Panel, System and Security, System, then click the Device Manager button.

When using Windows Vista, click Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, then click Device Manager.

If the User Account Control screen is displayed, follow the on-screen instructions.

In Windows XP, click Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, System, then click Device Manager on the Hardware sheet.

2. Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers then USB Printing Support.

If USB Printing Support is not displayed, make sure that the printer is correctly connected to the computer.

-⋗ Check 3: Make sure that the USB cable is securely plugged in to the printer and the computer.

3. Click the General tab and make sure that there is no indication of a problem with the device.

If a device error is displayed, refer to Windows help to resolve the error.
