Cannot receive a fax automatically.
Set the receive mode to one of the following.

If you set the receive mode to ⋖Answer⋗, ensure that an external telephone with a built-in answering machine is connected to the machine, that it is turned on, and that with an answering message has been recorded.
Print, send, or delete any jobs stored in the memory.
Cause and solution
Telephone and fax calls cannot be switched automatically.

If you have set receive mode to ⋖Answer⋗, ensure that an external telephone with built-in answering machine is connected to the machine, that it is turned on, and that an answering message has been recorded.
If the setting time is too short, incoming faxes may be treated as incoming phone calls. Set ⋖Ring Start Time⋗ to a longer setting.

Change the ⋖RX Start Speed⋗.

Print, send, or delete any jobs stored in the memory.
Some machines cannot send this signal. In these cases, receive the fax manually.

Cannot receive a fax manually.
Ensure the machine is set to receive manually.

Select ⋖Start Receiving⋗ and press [OK] before putting down the handset or entering the remote receive ID. Otherwise, you will disconnect the call.
Remove any documents from the feeder and try to receive the fax manually.
If [ ] (Start) is pressed while a document is loaded in the feeder, the document will be sent manually.
Cause and solution
Cannot receive a fax using the optical line.
Using the optical line is not guaranteed for machine operation. If the provider guarantees the following two points, however, you can use the optical line without Canon's guarantee.
* For the specifications of your line, contact your telephone carrier.
The optical line performs data communication in packet units. Sounds are only intermittent even if the packets are missing temporarily. However, fax communication may miss fax data due to missing packets, resulting in communication error. If the error occurs, change the ⋖RX Start Speed⋗.

If the problem is not solved after the change, contact the provider you are using.
Cause and solution
Faxes cannot be printed, or images on the faxes are spotted or uneven.

Load paper that meets the requirements for use.

Ask the sender to ensure that the scanning components of the machine are clean.
Cause and solution
Part of a received fax is cut off.
Adjust the paper guides of the paper cassette to fit the size of the paper.
Specify the correct paper size for the paper cassette.
Set ⋖Reduce RX Size⋗ to ⋖On⋗ before adjustment.

Cause and solution
Receipt speed is too slow.
Contact the sender and verify that the resolution of the sender's machine has been set properly.

Cannot get documents from information services.
Ensure that the telephone line type is set to tone dialing. If the type is set to the rotary pulse, press [
] (Tone) to switch to tone dialing.
Follow announcement from information services.
Cause and solution
Errors occur frequently while receiving faxes.
Ask the sender to check that his or her machine is functioning properly.
Cause and solution
Cannot print received faxes on both sides of the paper.
Verify the settings for 2-sided printing.
2-Sided Printing
Use this option to save paper by printing on both sides of each sheet.

Off(Default setting): Print on only one side of paper.
On: Print on both sides of paper.
Cause and solution
The external telephone does not ring when receiving faxes.
If the external telephone does not ring when the fax receive mode is set to ⋖Fax/Tel Auto Switch⋗, set ⋖Public Line Connection⋗ settings to ⋖Adapter 1⋗ or ⋖Adapter 2⋗.
Public Line Connection
The following problems may occur when fax receive mode is selected to ⋖Fax/Tel Auto Switch⋗.
- The external telephone does not ring.
- Cannot make a call using the external telephone.
You can solve these problems by changing this setting.

Direct (Default setting): Use this setting under normal conditions.
Adapter: 1 Select this option if a problem occurs when ⋖Direct⋗ is selected.
Adapter: 2 Select this option if the problem continues when ⋖Adapter 1⋗ is selected.
