Error Message: "Error in scanner"

Issue

When you try to scan or the scanner is scanning, an error message appears and the scan fails.

Cause and solution

The lock switch holding the scanning unit is not released completely.

Disconnect the interface cable from the scanner and release the lock switch completely.

Caution

Make sure to release the lock before connecting the scanner to the computer. If you use the scanner without releasing the lock, it may cause failure or trouble.

1. Peel the orange tape off the scanner.

2. Open the document cover and slide the lock switch toward the unlock mark to release the lock.

3. Close the document cover.

Caution

When carrying or transporting the scanner, make sure to lock the scanner by sliding the lock switch to the lock mark to lock the scanning unit.
Unlocking the Scanner

Cause and solution

The scanner may not be recognized by the computer.

Disconnect and reconnect the scanner.

* If the scanner is connected via USB hub, connect the scanner to the computer directly without hub.

* If your computer has multiple USB ports, connect the scanner to another port.

Make sure that the lock switch is released.

Connect the scanner to the computer with the supplied USB cable.

The connectors of USB cable have different shapes. Connect the wide flat connector of the USB cable to the computer, the small square one to the scanner.

Connect the supplied AC adapter to the scanner.

(1) Connect the supplied power cord to the AC adapter.

(2) Connect the AC adapter to the scanner.

(3) Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet.

Press the power switch to turn the power on.

Caution

Only use the USB cable, AC adapter, and the power cord provided with the scanner. Use of other cables or adapters may lead to a malfunction.
Always attach the AC adapter to the scanner before plugging in the power cord to the electrical outlet. Reversing this order may lead to malfunctions.
Handle the scanner with both hands when carrying.
Connecting the scanner to your computer

Cause and solution

The scanner driver is not installed correctly.

Uninstall and reinstall the driver and then reconnect the scanner.

Make sure that the lock switch is released.

Connect the scanner to the computer with the supplied USB cable.

The connectors of USB cable have different shapes. Connect the wide flat connector of the USB cable to the computer, the small square one to the scanner.

Connect the supplied AC adapter to the scanner.

(1) Connect the supplied power cord to the AC adapter.

(2) Connect the AC adapter to the scanner.

(3) Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet.

Press the power switch to turn the power on.

Caution

Only use the USB cable, AC adapter, and the power cord provided with the scanner. Use of other cables or adapters may lead to a malfunction.
Always attach the AC adapter to the scanner before plugging in the power cord to the electrical outlet. Reversing this order may lead to malfunctions.

Connecting the scanner to your computer

Caution

* If your Mac OS X is used with multiple users (accounts), log in as the first created administrator to install the software. You cannot install the software if you logged in with an added administrator account.

* The reinstallation will require to restart the computer in the process. Read this page carefully before reinstalling the driver.

1. Disconnect the USB cable from the scanner.

2. Uninstall the currently used scanner driver.

On Macintosh HD, open [Library], [ImageCapture], then [Twain Data Sources]. Drag and drop the [(your scanner name).ds] icon to the trash can icon.

3. Restart the computer.

The scanner driver is uninstalled.

In the next step, install the scanner driver after the computer is restarted.

4. Place the CanoScan Setup CD-ROM in the drive.

[CANOSCAN] Finder opens. Double-click the [Setup] icon in the finder.

5. If "Authenticate" screen is displayed, enter the administrator's (first created user) name and password and then click [OK].

6. Place the Setup CD-ROM in the drive.

When the initial screen for setting up is displayed, click [Custom Install].

7. Install the scanner driver from the Setup CD-ROM.

When the screen to select software is displayed, make sure that ScanGear is checked and remove the checkmarks of the other applications. Click [Next].

8. When the "License Agreement" screen appears, read it carefully and click [Yes].

9. The installation starts. The installation progress will be displayed until the Setup CD-ROM stops.

10. Click [Restart].

You cannot use the scanner unless you restart the computer.

11. After the computer is restarted, remove the Setup CD-ROM from the drive.

If the menu screen appears, click [Exit] and then remove the CD-ROM.

12. After the installation is completed, connect the scanner to the computer.

Caution

* Make sure that the lock switch is released.

* Connect the scanner to the computer with the supplied USB cable.

* The scanner may not work properly if the scanner is connected via USB hub. In this case, connect the scanner to the computer directly.

Reinstalling the scanner driver from the CD-ROM (Macintosh)

Caution

* If your Windows computer is used with multiple users, log in as an Administrator (System administrator) to install the software. Continue the installation if your computer is not used with multiple users. Refer to the manual or help of Windows for details.

* The reinstallation will require to restart the computer in the process. Read this page carefully before reinstalling the driver.

1. Disconnect the USB cable from the scanner.

2. Uninstall the currently used scanner driver.

Click Start, point to [(All) Programs], ["Your scanner model name"], then click [Uninstall].

3. When "Scanner Driver Uninstaller" is displayed, click [Execute].

4. When "Uninstallation Complete" is displayed, click [Complete].

5. Restart the computer.

The uninstallation of the scanner driver is completed. In the next step, install the scanner driver after the computer is restarted.

6. Place the Setup CD-ROM in the drive.

When the initial screen for setting up is displayed, click [Custom Install].

7. Install the scanner driver from the Setup CD-ROM.
