Cannot scan film

Issue

You do not know how to set a film on the scanner.

You do not know how to adjust the driver's settings when scanning film.

Computer stops operating during scanning.

Cause and solution

The protective sheet is not removed.

Remove the protective sheet from the document cover.

1. Remove the protective sheet from the document cover.

Press and hold the lever at the top of the protective sheet while you (1) pull the sheet outward and (2) detach it.

Put the protective sheet (3) back to the document cover when you are finished scanning film.

Caution

Store the protective sheet in a safe place so that it will not get lost.
Always put the protective sheet back when you are not scanning film to protect the light source in the document cover.

2. Set the film.

Caution

* Take care to hold the film by its edges to avoid transferring dirt or fingerprints to it.

* If there is any dust on the film or the document glass, it will affect the image quality. Remove any dust from the film and the document glass.

* Do not block the calibration slot on the film guide when scanning film. Colors will not scan correctly if the calibration slot is obstructed.

* If a label for administrative purpose is stuck on a frame without image, it may be recognized as an image.

35mm Strips:

a. Insert the film into the film guide.

Open the film holder (2) on the film guide, place the film face down (correctly viewed from below) (3) as shown in the figure. Ensure that there is no gap between the edge of the film and the film guide.

Close the film holder holding the both edges with your fingers adding slight stress inward so that its tabs are aligned with the fits on the film guide.

If the film holder does not close completely, place the film inside of the groove properly and then close the holder.

(1) Calibration Slot (Colors will not scan correctly if the calibration slot is obstructed.)

b. Place the film guide on the document glass.

Align the film guide's tab with the FILM symbol on the document glass of the scanner.

35mm Slides:

a. Place the film guide on the document glass.

b. Insert the film into the film guide.

Place the film face down (correctly viewed from below) in the film guide as shown in the figure.

120 Format Films (Strips):

a. Place the film guide on the document glass. Open the film holder and remove the film retainer sheet (black paper).

Align the film guide's tab with the FILM symbol on the document glass of the scanner.

b. Insert the film into the Film Guide.

Place the film face down (correctly viewed from below) inside of the groove. Ensure that there is no gap between the edge of the film and the film guide.

3. Close the document cover.

Setting Film

Cause and solution

The film guide is not in position.

Place the film guide on the document glass correctly.

1. Remove the protective sheet from the document cover.

The calibration slot on the film guide is blocked.

Do not block the calibration slot on the Film Guide with film or something.

Do not block the calibration slot (1) on the film guide when scanning film.

Colors will not be scanned correctly if the calibration slot is obstructed.

Do not block the calibration slot on the Film Guide with film or something.

Cause and solution

The document cover is not closed.

Close the document cover properly.

Cause and solution

ScanGear is not set for scanning film.

Select the type of film in [Select Source] of ScanGear's Simple Mode or Advanced Mode.

In Advanced Mode, you can specify the color mode, output resolution, image brightness, color tone, etc. when scanning.

This section explains how to scan film.

1. Place the film on the platen, then start ScanGear.

2. Click [Advanced Mode].

The [Advanced Mode] tab will be displayed.

Caution

Settings are not retained when you switch between modes.

3. Set [Select Source], [Film Size] and [Color Mode].

Select Source

Select from [Color Negative Film], [Color Positive Film], [Monochrome Negative Film] and [Monochrome Positive Film].

Film Size

Select from [35mm Strip], [35mm Slide] and [120 Format].

Caution

These items can be selected only when the whole film image is displayed in the preview area. Click (Thumbnail view) on the toolbar to switch the view.

Color Mode

Select a color mode according to the document type and purpose.

ColorSelect this to scan color film. The image is expressed in 256 levels (8 bit) of R(ed), G(reen), and B(lue).
Color(48bit)Select this to scan color film. The image is expressed in 65536 levels (16 bit) of R(ed), G(reen), and B(lue).
GrayscaleSelect this to scan black and white film. The image is expressed in 256 levels (8 bit) of black and white.
Grayscale(16bit)Select this to scan black and white film. The image is expressed in 65536 levels (16 bit) of black and white.

4. Click [Preview] and check the images.

Preview image appears in the preview area. Image is cropped (scan area is specified) automatically according to the film size. Select the frames to scan.

5. Set [Output Settings].

Output Resolution

Select from [50dpi], [75dpi], [100dpi], [150dpi], [200dpi], [300dpi], [400dpi], [600dpi], [800dpi], [1200dpi], [1600dpi], [2400dpi], [3200dpi], [4800dpi], [6400dpi], [9600dpi].

Alternatively, type a value in the 25-19200 dpi range (in 1 dpi increments).

Output Size Select [Flexible] to set custom size or select a size for printing or displaying.

Caution

Select [Add/Delete...] to set custom size and save it as a new output size option.

6. Adjust the cropping frame, correct images and adjust colors as required.

[Image Settings] items and Color Adjustment buttons:

Image SettingsApply the following functions: Auto Tone, Unsharp Mask, Remove Dust and Scratches, Fading Correction, Grain Correction, Backlight Correction and Exposure/Tone Settings.
Color Adjustment ButtonsAdjust the image's overall brightness, color tone, contrast, etc.

7. Click [Scan].

Scanning starts.

When scanning is completed, a dialog box prompting you to select the next action opens. Follow the prompt to complete.

Caution

ScanGear's response after scanning can be specified in [Status of ScanGear dialog after scanning] on the [Scan] tab of the [Preferences] dialog box in [Advanced Mode].

Scanning Film in ScanGear's Advanced Mode

Cause and solution

MP Navigator EX is not set for scanning film.

Select [Film] or [Auto mode] in [Document Type] of MP Navigator EX.

1. Set the film on the scanner.

(1) Remove the protective sheet from the document cover.

(2) Place the film.

(3) Close the document cover.

2. Start MP Navigator EX.

Windows

On the Windows desktop, double-click [MP Navigator EX 1.0].

Alternatively, on the Windows taskbar, click [Start], point to [(All) Programs], [Canon Utilities], then [MP Navigator EX 1.0]. Then click [MP Navigator EX 1.0].

The MP Navigator EX one-click mode screen or navigation mode screen opens.

Macintosh

Open [Applications]-[Canon Utilities] folder in the hard disk that you installed MP Navigator EX, and double-click [MP Navigator EX 1.0] icon. Then click [MP Navigator EX 1.0].

If the one-click mode screen opens, go to Step 4.

3. Point to [One-click].

4. Click the corresponding icon.

You can scan films using [Copy], [Print], [Save], [Photo-1] and [Photo-2] buttons.

In this example, the [Save] button is used.

The [Save] dialog box opens.

5. Select the type of film, [Film(Auto mode)] or [Auto Mode].

Negative FilmSelect this to scan 35 mm negative film (film strips).
Positive FilmSelect this to scan 35 mm positive film (film strips or mounted slides).
Film(Auto mode)Automatically detects negative or positive film.
Auto ModeAutomatically detects the type of document or film to be scanned.

Caution

To scan mounted negative slides or 120 format films, scan in ScanGear's Advanced Mode.

6. Select [Resolution].

7. Click [Scan].

8. Check the frames you want to scan and click [Scan].

The selected frames are scanned. When scanning is completed, the scanned images are processed according to the function assigned to the button you pressed.

Scanning Film with MP Navigator EX

Cause and solution

Resolution setting is too high and scanning stops partway through.

Adjust the resolution and scan again.

Scanning may stop partway through if the resolution setting is too high.

You can adjust the resolution by changing the setting of ScanGear or MP Navigator EX.

In Advanced Mode, you can specify the color mode, output resolution, image brightness, color tone, etc. when scanning.

This section explains how to scan film.

1. Place the film on the platen, then start ScanGear.

2. Click [Advanced Mode].

The [Advanced Mode] tab will be displayed.

Caution

Caution

Scanning Film with MP Navigator EX

You can check the file size of the image before scanning in ScanGear's [Advanced Mode].

1. Select the [Advanced Mode] tab in ScanGear.

2. Specify the resolution.

Select a value from the pull-down menu (1) of [Output Resolution] in [Output Settings], or input the value directly into the textbox (2) with keyboard.

3. Select the document type in [Select Source] and click [Preview] to display preview images.

4. Select the frame you want know the data size from the preview images.

5. [Data Size:] displays the size of the image file (BMP or PICT format) that will be created by scanning the preview image in the cropping frame in the specified color mode.

Caution

If the resolution is doubled, for example, the file size quadruples. And if files become too large, processing takes longer and computer memory resources may be stretched. Avoid raising the resolution any higher than absolutely required.
When data size is large, [Data Size] is displayed in red letters.

Caution

This value is roughly estimated. The actual data size varies according to the image.
Data sizes will be smaller if images are saved in JPEG or other formats that produce compressed image files.
