Techniques for shooting with the zoom (on the telephoto end) (PowerShot G12)

If you cannot shoot the subject up close with the optical zoom, please consider the following.

Using the digital zoom

You can use the digital zoom to zoom up to a maximum of approximately 20x and capture subjects that are too far away for the optical zoom to enlarge.

Press the ⋖MENU⋗ button (), and from the [Shooting] tab () set the [Digital Zoom] to [Standard].

Caution

If the [Aspect Ratio] is set to something other than [4:3], the [Digital Zoom] cannot be used.

If the data type for the image is set to something other than [JPEG] (), the [Digital Zoom] cannot be used.

The [Digital Zoom] cannot be used in the following modes.

- [Low Light] (), [Quick Shot] (), [Color Accent] (), [Color Swap] (), [High Dynamic Range] (), [Nostalgic] (), [Fish-eye Effect] (), [Miniature Effect] (), [Stitch Assist] (), [Miniature Effect (Movie)] (), [Color Accent (Movie)] (), [Color Swap (Movie)] ()

Caution

Using the safety zoom

If shooting with the digital zoom, the images taken may appear coarse.

To shoot without the image quality deteriorating, shoot with the [Zoom Bar] within the yellow range (the safety zoom).

Caution

Using the digital tele-converter

With the [Digital Tele-Converter] setting, the focal length of the lens can be increased by a factor equivalent to 1.4x or 2.3x. This makes it possible to increase the magnification without compromising the brightness of the lens even more than increasing the magnification to the same rate in ordinary zoom operations (including digital zoom), enabling you to shoot with a faster shutter speed, thereby minimizing camera shake and subject blurring.

Press the ⋖MENU⋗ button (), and from the [Shooting] tab () set the [Digital Zoom] to either [1.4x] or [2.3x].

Caution

If the pixel count is either [Large] () or [Medium 1] (), the magnification will appear in blue, and the images taken may appear coarse.

Cannot be used with the digital zoom.

If the [Aspect Ratio] is set to something other than [4:3], the [Digital Tele-Converter] cannot be used.

If the data type for the image is set to something other than [JPEG] (), the [Digital Tele-Converter] cannot be used.

In the following modes, the [1.4x] or [2.3x] settings cannot be made.

Caution

Using the [TC-DC58D] tele-converter

By mounting the [TC-DC58D] tele-converter (sold separately), you can shoot telephoto shots (at 1.4x the focal length of the camera).
