Printing Is Blurred

Colors Are Wrong

White Streaks

Cause and solution

Check 1: Print the Nozzle Check Pattern and perform any necessary maintenance operations such as Print Head Cleaning.

Print the Nozzle Check Pattern to determine whether the ink ejects properly from the print head nozzles.

-⋗ [ Printing the Nozzle Check Pattern ], [ Cleaning the Print Head ], [ Cleaning the Print Head Deeply ]

If the Nozzle Check Pattern is not printed correctly:

Check to see if a particular color's ink tank is not empty.

If the Nozzle Check Pattern is not printed correctly though ink is sufficient, perform the Print Head Cleaning and try printing the Nozzle Check Pattern again.

If the problem is not resolved after performing the Print Head Cleaning twice:

Perform the Print Head Deep Cleaning.

If the problem is not resolved after performing the Print Head Deep Cleaning, turn off the machine and perform another Print Head Deep Cleaning after 24 hours. When you turn the machine off, do not unplug it from the power supply.

If the problem is not resolved after performing the Print Head Deep Cleaning twice:

If Print Head Deep Cleaning does not resolve the problem, the Print Head may be damaged. Contact the service center.

Cause and solution

Check 2: Did you confirm the paper and print quality settings?

Cause and solution

Check 3: Check the status of ink tanks. Replace the ink tank if the ink has run out.

When you need to replace an ink tank, follow the procedure below.

Caution

If you remove an ink tank, replace it immediately. Do not leave the machine with the ink tank removed.
Use a new ink tank for replacement. Installing a used ink tank may cause the nozzles to clog. Furthermore, with such an ink tank, the machine will not be able to inform you when to replace the ink tank properly.
Once an ink tank has been installed, do not remove it from the machine and leave it out in the open. This will cause the ink tank to dry out, and the machine may not operate properly when it is reinstalled. To maintain optimal printing quality, use an ink tank within six months of first use.

Caution

Color ink may be consumed even when printing a black-and-white document or when black-and-white printing is specified.

Every ink is also consumed in the standard cleaning and deep cleaning of the print head, which may be necessary to maintain the performance of the machine. When an ink tank is out of ink, replace it immediately with a new one.

1. Make sure that the power is turned on, and open the paper output tray gently.

2. Lift the scanning unit / cover, then hold it open with the scanning unit support (A).

The print head holder moves to the replacement position.

Caution

Do not hold the print head holder to stop or move it forcibly. Do not touch the print head holder until it stops completely.

Caution

Do not place any object on the document cover. It will fall into the rear tray when the document cover is opened and cause the machine to malfunction.
If the document cover is open, you cannot open the scanning unit / cover. Be sure to lift the scanning unit / cover with the document cover closed.
When opening or closing the scanning unit / cover, do not touch the buttons and LCD on the operation panel. Doing so may result in an unexpected operation.
Do not touch the metallic parts or other parts inside the machine.
If the scanning unit / cover is left open for more than 10 minutes, the print head holder moves to the right. In this case, close and reopen the scanning unit / cover.

3. Remove the ink tank with the lamp flashing fast.

Push the tab (B) and lift the ink tank to remove.

Do not touch the print head lock lever (C).

Caution

Handle the ink tank carefully to avoid staining of clothing or the surrounding area.
Discard the empty ink tank according to the local laws and regulations regarding disposal of consumables.

Caution

Do not remove two or more ink tanks at the same time. Be sure to replace ink tanks one by one when replacing two or more ink tanks.
For details on ink lamp flashing speed, see [ Checking the Ink Status with the Ink Lamps ] .

4. Prepare a new ink tank.

(1) Take a new ink tank out of its package, remove the orange tape ( ) completely, then remove the protective film ( ) completely.

Caution

Handle an ink tank carefully. Do not drop or apply excessive pressure to it.
If the orange tape remains on the L-shape air hole (D), ink may splash or the machine may not print properly.

(2) Hold the ink tank with the orange protective cap (E) pointing up while being careful not to block the L-shape air hole (D).

(3) Slowly twist the orange protective cap (E) 90 degrees horizontally to remove it off.

Caution

Do not push the sides of the ink tank. If you push the sides of the ink tank with the L-shape air hole (D) blocked, ink may splash.
Do not touch the inside of the orange protective cap (E) or the open ink port (F). The ink may stain your hands if you touch them.
Do not reattach the protective cap (E) once you have removed it. Discard it according to the local laws and regulations regarding disposal of consumables.

5. Install the new ink tank.

(1) Insert the front end of the ink tank into the print head at a slant.

Make sure that the position of the ink tank matches the label.

(2) Press the mark (PUSH) on the ink tank until the ink tank snaps firmly into place.

Make sure that the ink lamp lights up red.

Caution

You cannot print if the ink tank is installed in the wrong position. Be sure to install the ink tank in the correct position according to the label on the print head holder.
You cannot print unless all the ink tanks are installed. Be sure to install all the ink tanks.

6. Close the scanning unit / cover.

(1) Lift the scanning unit / cover slightly.

(2) Set the scanning unit support (G) back to its original position.

(3) Close the scanning unit / cover gently.

Caution

When setting the scanning unit support (G) back to its original position, be sure to hold the scanning unit / cover firmly, and be careful not to get your fingers caught.

Caution

When opening or closing the scanning unit / cover, do not touch the buttons and LCD on the operation panel. Doing so may result in an unexpected operation.

Caution

If the error message appears after the scanning unit / cover is closed, take appropriate action.

-⋗ [ An Error Message Is Displayed on the LCD ]

When you start printing after replacing the ink tank, the machine starts cleaning the print head automatically. Do not perform any other operations until the machine completes the cleaning of the print head.
If the print head is out of alignment, as indicated by misaligned printed ruled lines or similar symptoms, adjust the print head position.

-⋗ [ Aligning the Print Head ]

The machine may make noise during operation.

Cause and solution

Check 6: Is the Platen Glass or the glass of ADF dirty?

Clean the Platen Glass or the glass of ADF.

Caution

If the glass of ADF is dirty, black streaks appear on the paper as shown below.

Cause and solution

Check 7: Check that the original is loaded correctly on the Platen Glass or in the ADF

Paper Sources to Load Paper

The machine has two paper sources to feed paper; cassette and rear tray.

You can load paper in either one of the paper sources, depending on the page size and media type of paper. Paper is fed from the cassette or rear tray depending on the selection of the page size or media type.

-⋗ [ Media Types You Can Use ]

Caution

When printing, select the correct page size and media type. If you select the wrong page size or media type, the machine may feed paper from the wrong paper source or may not print with the proper print quality.

For details on how to load paper in each paper source, see below.

-⋗ Refer to [ Loading Plain Paper in the Cassette ] within this webpage.

-⋗ Refer to [ Loading Photo Paper in the Rear Tray ] within this webpage.

-⋗ [ Loading Envelopes in the Rear Tray ]

When ON is selected for Auto feed switch in FAX paper settings and the paper source used when you last printed is empty, the machine automatically switches to the other paper source and prints received faxes.

- Loading Plain Paper in the cassette

When you use A4, B5, A5, or Letter-sized plain paper, load it in the cassette.

The machine feeds paper from the cassette automatically by selecting plain paper (A4, B5, A5, or Letter size) in the print settings with the operation panel or the printer driver when printing.

- Loading Photo Paper / Envelopes in the rear tray

When you use photo paper, load it in the rear tray.

The machine feeds paper from the rear tray automatically by selecting the media types other than plain paper, such as photo paper, in the print settings with the operation panel or the printer driver when printing.

When you use plain paper other than A4, B5, A5, or Letter size, also load it in the rear tray.

Loading Plain Paper in the Cassette

You can load only A4, B5, A5, or Letter-sized plain paper in the cassette.

Load other sizes or types of paper in the rear tray.

Caution

We recommend Canon genuine photo paper for printing photos.

For details on the Canon genuine paper, see [ Media Types You Can Use ].

You can use general copy paper.

For the page size and paper weight you can use for this machine, see [ Media Types You Can Use ].

1. Prepare paper.

Align the edges of paper. If paper is curled, flatten it.

Caution

Align the edges of paper neatly before loading. Loading paper without aligning the edges may cause paper jams.
If paper is curled, hold the curled corners and gently bend them in the opposite direction until the paper becomes completely flat.

For details on how to flatten curled paper, see [ Load the paper after correcting its curl. ] in [ Paper Is Smudged/Printed Surface Is Scratched ].

2. Load paper.

(1) Pull out the cassette from the machine.

(2) Slide the paper guide (A) to align with the mark of page size.

The paper guide (A) will stop when it aligns with the corresponding page size mark.

Caution

If you cut plain paper into small size such as 4" x 6" (10 x 15 cm), 4" x 8" (101.6 x 203.2 mm), 5" x 7" (13 x 18 cm), or 2.17" x 3.58" (55.0 x 91.0 mm) (Card size) to perform trial print, it can cause paper jams.

When using Photo Paper Plus Semi-gloss SG-201, even if the sheet is curled, load one sheet at a time as it is. If you roll up this paper to flatten, this may cause cracks on the surface of the paper and reduce the print quality.

2. Load paper.

(1) Open the paper support, raise it, then tip it back.

(2) Open the paper output tray gently.

(3) Slide the paper guides (A) to open them, and load the paper in the center of the rear tray WITH THE PRINT SIDE FACING YOU.

(4) Slide the paper guides (A) to align them with both sides of the paper stack.

Do not slide the paper guides too hard against the paper. The paper may not be fed properly.

Caution

Always load paper in the portrait orientation (B). Loading paper in the landscape orientation (C) can cause paper jams.

Caution

Do not load sheets of paper higher than the load limit mark (D).

Caution

After loading paper

Select the size and type of the loaded paper on the print settings screen of the operation panel or printer driver.

Loading Documents in the ADF (Auto Document Feeder)

You can load documents to copy, fax, or scan in the ADF (Auto Document Feeder).

Caution

To scan a document at optimum quality, load it on the platen glass.

1. Make sure that any original has been removed from the platen glass.

2. Load a document in the ADF.

(1) Open the document tray.

(2) Insert the document in the document tray until you hear a beep sound.

Load the document WITH THE SIDE TO SCAN FACING UP in the document tray.

Caution

When you set the alarm to be silent in Sound control of Device user settings, the alarm will not beep even if the document is inserted in the document tray.

(3) Adjust the document guides to match the width of the document.

Do not slide the document guides too hard against the document. The document may not be fed properly.

Caution

You can specify the output setting when scanning both sided originals in Two-sided paper output setting of Device user settings. You can select whether to output the pages in correct order or with front and back reversed. The reverse setting prioritizes scanning speed.

Loading Paper

Cause and solution

Check 8: Is the original document is loaded with the proper side facing up?

When loading the original on the Platen Glass, the side to be copied should be face down. When loading the original in the ADF, the side to be copied should be face up.
