What is slow sync?

The Basics:

Slow Sync is a generic term relating to flash photography technique. It is used when you need to select a long shutter speed to expose a dark background, while firing a flash to illuminate a foreground subject. You can choose whether to fire the flash the instant the shutter opens, or just before it closes.

See Second Curtain Flash for more information.
