  • What is Red Straps?

    Red Straps is a free online three-month youth mentoring program designed to help 16-24 year old hobbyist photographers and filmmakers realise a future career in the creative industries.

    Guided by Canon Australia experts and two young professional mentors, the Red Straps program comprises six online modules that will upskill and inform participants on topics such as: Identifying your creative voice; Tools & tech of the trade; Creating a professional brand in the industry, and more. The Red Straps 2020 program commences in the closed Red Straps Facebook group on 6th August, 2020.
  • Why is Canon doing this?

We want to help enable those most passionate to make imaging their career, and connect them with young professionals making national and international impact with their content. We are about supporting the future of the industry, and helping to build a community of creators made stronger by connection.
  • When is the cut off for applications?

    Free to join until 3rd August, 2020. The first module will go live on 6th August, 2020 in the closed Red Straps Facebook group.

  • What is the selection for participation?

    The Red Straps 2020 mentor program is uniquely designed to benefit hobbyist photographers and filmmakers who have an interest in pursuing a future career in the creative industries, and are willing to unlock new skillsets via access to inspiring young professional mentors who are already pursuing this career path.

    Participants must be individual Australian residents aged between 16 and 24 years. Participants who are under 18 years of age must have the consent of their parent or guardian to accept and agree to the T&Cs of participation prior to registration. Participants must be able to commit to the duration of the Program, which will run from 6th August – 29th October, 2020.

  • How will I be mentored?

    Six free, online mentoring modules will be delivered to participants every fortnight in the closed Red Straps Facebook group from Thursday, 6th August. Each module will involve a video tutorial delivered by one of the Red Straps mentors, after which a creative challenge will be set for students to complete, submit for expert critique, and finesse over the next week. Participants will have the opportunity to ask mentors questions by leaving comments in the Facebook group.

    In completing the initial program, 10 participants will be selected by the Red Straps mentors as cadets to receive an additional three-weeks of online mentoring to further elevate their skills and business acumen.

  • What if I’m already a professional photographer?

    The Red Straps 2020 mentor program is uniquely designed to benefit young hobbyist photographers and filmmakers who have an interest in pursuing a future career in the creative industries. If you’re aged 16-24 years and are already generating income from your craft you are welcome to join however may not garner as much value as those just starting out.
  • How do I register?

  • Can others follow our progress during the program?

    Red Straps courses, briefs, discussions and content submissions will take place within a private Red Straps Facebook group, accessible to only registered eligible participants. Participants are welcome to share outcomes of their creative briefs and provide updates of their personal development on their social channels. Participants are encouraged to use the following tags: #CanonRedStraps2020 #CanonAustralia

  • What age do I need to be to apply?

    Participants must be individual Australian residents aged between 16-24 years. Participants who are under 18 years of age must have the consent of their parent or guardian to accept and agree to the terms and conditions of participation prior to registration.
  • Do I have to own a Canon camera?

    No, you can use any image capture device.

  • I am not an Australian resident, can I still enter?

    No, participants must be individual Australian residents aged between 16-24 years only and currently living in Australia.
