What is Parallax?

The Basics:

Parallax is the term used to describe the difference between an image as it is seen by the photographer through the viewfinder, compared with the image that is actually transmitted through the lens. This error only occurs on viewfinder cameras that don’t allow viewing through the actual taking lens itself (such as rangefinders and compact cameras), and is not a problem with SLR cameras.
