Setting Up Your Camera For TikTok

Setting up your camera for TikTok, with the Canon PowerShot G7X Mark III.

Photographer Tung Bien (@Rarepanguin) is no stranger to creating beautiful and engaging TikTok videos, so we’ve asked him to show us how it’s done with the Canon PowerShot G7X Mark III. On this page you’ll also find instructions on camera settings and how to quickly transfer your video footage to your smartphone.

@canonanz Here are some easy steps to set up your camera for shooting TikTok videos. In this video @rarepenguin shows us how it’s done using the Canon PowerShot G7X Mark III. 📸 . #canonanz #photographytips #photography ♬ original sound - Canon Australia & New Zealand

Quick Set Up

  1. Turn your camera on and adjust the top dial to movie mode (video camera icon)
  2. Press menu on the back of your camera and select the red menu (camera icon)
  3. On the first page select [Shooting mode] then ensure the video camera without the ‘M’ is selected. This will allow the camera to automatically decide the best settings for your video.
  4. In the menu manoeuvre to page 3 and select [White balance]. Ensure [AWB] is selected. This will allow the camera to automatically adjust the white balance during filming.
  5. Manouvre to page 5 and select [AF method] and set to face tracking. This tells the camera to automatically track your face while filming so you are always in focus. In the same menu select [Eye detection], then select [Enable].
  6. Turn your camera to shoot in portrait mode for vertical video. Aim the camera at your subject and press the record button to start.

Enhance Your Video:

Get creative and take control over more of your camera's settings.

  1. Press [Menu] then [Shooting mode] in red menu 1 (Camera Icon)
  2. Select the video camera icon with the ‘M’ above it. This will allow you to manually control your ISO, aperture and shutter speed. Setting your video mode to manual will allow you to get more creative with the look and feel of your video.
    1. Aperture: The aperture can be described as the opening of the lens and can add dimension to your images by controlling the depth of field. As you increase the aperture, the opening and depth of field of the lens decreases, so your image will become darker. If you want to create an image with a blurred background then decrease the aperture so the opening is wide open.
    2. Shutter Speed: Shutter speed is the length of time the camera’s shutter is open. In photography a faster shutter speed is recommended to freeze action without blur. However, for video it’s recommended that your shutter speed remains at twice the speed of your frame rate for a more natural look.
    3. ISO: Will brighten or darken your image/video. As the ISO increases, so will the brightness of your image or video. However, raising your ISO too high can create grain or noise within your footage.
  3. In the same menu select [Movie rec quality] then [Movie rec.size]. In this menu you’ll see the different video quality types and frame rates. Choose from shooting in 4K, Full HD (1080p) and HD (720p). You can adjust the frames per second between 25fps (good for regular video), or 50fps (good for slow-mo).
